What makes you think any of us shop there? You are aware that we are allowed to formulate an opinion of their sh*tty business practices even if we don't shop there right?

I know some cool gamestop employees, as long as you are one of them and not one of the doucebag ones that think they are the king of video games then you are not my enemy.

I was dumb to not listen to the GS employee who told me that if I didn't pre-order Halo 2, I'd never find it anywhere. Even to this day, I've never been able to get a copy of that elusive game!

I used to manage multiple Gamestops and we have at least one other member who used to (or still does) work there. And I'm one of the most vocal critics of the company, because I've been privy to their shady practices firsthand.

It was obvious you worked there when you first posted. But now that it's open and out there, I wonder if it's part of the training to be sh*tty at PR. The attitude of "you'll bitch, but you still take it - ha-ha-ha" is part of the problem.

I can't bring myself to hate them as long as they keep their "return for cash back in 7 days" policy on used games.

However, the same employee who told me a year ago to "just use the store like a rental place" was bragging about how he "borrows" new games.

Which are the invalid complaints?

That's great for the guy who buys the game day 1 and returns it on day 7. Not so great for the next guy who buys a "new" game on day 8 that's actually been played all week.

Gamestop IS that powerful.

Yesterday I was reading this article: "Apple Tops U.S. Retail Chains in Sales Per Square Foot", Gamestop is number 5 there. Below Apple, Tiffany, Coach and Lululemon. That's crazy for a store that "only" sells videogames.

Link in case anyone is interested, but it only talks about Apple: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/24/...r-square-foot/

gamestop tries to fill every square inch of the store with something. its about as bad as costco, trader joes and century 21 where you can't stand in line without people walking around you trying to get at a product that you're blocking access to

apple, tiffany and other higher end retailers have nice open stores that you can walk through without bumping into others.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Not sure how the Apple stores are in your area, but the one by me is always PACKED wall to wall with people. 90% of whom are wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

RichC208-26-11 09:08 AM

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Yeah... I think he means products though. The Apple store doesn't fill every square inch with products... but the places are always full to the brim with actual people. Hate that place, just way too many people in a very small amount of space.

...and that guy that works there that constantly has a pen in that opening in his ear.

I was going to say the same thing, minus the Ray-Ban's. Maybe it's a West Coast thing. ;) The stores are always so crowded that it's very difficult to just walk in and browse. Often I find it's a lot of younger kids looking for a place to hang out.

 I love the "unless you pre-ordered we don't have extra copies to sell/it's gonna be hard to find" bullsh*t. I don't recall the game they pulled that with me on(it was years ago) but I just walked across the parking lot to Wal-Mart and bought it.

I've been trying to rack my brain to figure out the last time I bought something there. It was the Bioshock Infinite Game Informer issue last fall. <s>Before that I think it was The Bioshock LE back in '07. </s>

*edit - just scanned the thread. Looks like the last time I bought something was the red/black exclusive 360 controller. Good times re-reading the thread btw. I bitch about GS lot.

It's a policy on used games. Both are buying used.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Thankfully Square Enix has put out an update to solve mod of the PC issues. This will make things like playing the game more enjoyable, along with deciding who’s side you’re on: humanities or evolution.

Plus, if you’re one of those people who got short-handed by GameStop earlier this week, and didn’t receive their OnLive coupon – then you’re two-times a winner. As it turns out, GameStop is offering a $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase promotion for any PC gamers who were affected. The $50 gift card replaces the OnLive version of the game, while the “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” seems to be a much needed olive branch – after the company’s PR nightmare.

Purchasers wanting to receive their coupon and gift card will simply have to bring in a copy of the incoming email (that will look similar to the one below), along with their receipt. We strongly recommend patience, as this email just went out and the procedures will take a little bit of time to get organized.

So anyone who bought from them basically got the game free and they can use that 50 dollar gc on the buy 2 get 1 promo and if under 50 which should be easy get 4 games for 50 bucks.
“Dear GameStop customer,

Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor’s coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor’s offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.

For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.

Sincerely,
Paul Raines
CEO, GameStop”

Well, I must say that this is a good way to make it up, but it was still wrong to do it without having something like this in place already if they were going to do it. They tried it to see if they could get away with it first and when they didn't they grudgingly offered something for it, still sh*tty in the first place if you ask me.

I have to say, maybe the worst part of this entire thing is that it caused me to learn that GameStop employees are called "Game Advisors".

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

They could be called Game Geniuses...

Dan08-26-11 04:52 PM

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Aren't they really Game Artists, if you think about it?

Decker08-26-11 05:47 PM

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

I consider them more "Game Stylists".

Supermallet08-26-11 06:03 PM

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

They're obviously Game Gurus. Or maybe Game Judi Dench.

I don't get it. I guess it's some Deus Ex reference. I'm too cool and popular to keep up with all video game references, nerdoes.
