Although we don’t know for sure, Elliot Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) younger brother Joe Jr. (played by Michael Trotter) is caught up in a crime ring and he might end up as collateral damage. In the penultimate episode, titled “Goodbye,” fans learned that Joe Jr. works for Julian Emery (guest star Tom Payne), a criminal mastermind known as Redcoat, whomthe Organized Crime Control Bureau has been investigating.

Years prior, when Joe Jr. was still serving in the military, Emery offered him a job and used his heroin addiction to persuade him into accepting it. At one point in the episode, Elliot and his older brother Randall (Dean Norris) kidnapped Joe Jr. and tried to get him clean. However, Joe Jr. escaped and returned to Emery. The episode concluded with the younger Stabler informing his brother that he plans on being a mole for the OCCB. “Now you’ve got a guy on the inside,” he told Elliot.

Based on the promo for the season finale, we can assume that the undercover mission goes awry and that Joe Jr. might face deadly fate. “I’m putting my brother in the line of fire,” Elliot tells his sergeant, Ayanna Bell (Danielle Moné Truitt), in the clip. The episode’s official synopsis reads: “When the ATF Bureau plans a raid of Redcoat’s warehouse, Trisha promises to help Stabler keep Joe Jr. safe; Bell comes face to face with the man who killed Sam; another Stabler family dinner causes tensions to run high.”

The promo also features a clip of several ATF vehicles speeding to the warehouse as Bell forewarns: “Something’s not right.” It ends with Elliot searching the warehouse for his brother, who can be seen boarding a private jet. “You think he’s playing both sides?” Elliot says as the brothers exchange a glance across the tarmac. If Joe Jr. is in fact working for both Emery and the OCCB, it will most likely not end well for him. Emery could easily find out that he’s feeding information to the cops or perhaps Joe. Jr will get caught in the crossfire of the ATF’s raid.

Joe Jr. was first introduced during the third episode of Season 4, shortly after Randall came into town the episode prior. He is named after the family’s late patriarch, Joseph Stabler, who was also a detective for the New York City Police Department. In his debut episode, Elliot had to find out from Randall that Joe Jr. was back in N.Y.C. “He’s in New York. He’s been here for months. … He got discharged,” Randall told Elliot. “Not a story for me to tell. I’m surprised you haven’t connected.” Later on, when all three brothers reconnected at a bar, Elliot grilled his younger brother for not telling him he was back. “What the hell’s the matter with you?” he demanded. “How long have you been in New York?” After Joe Jr. gave a half-assed response, Elliot scolded: “You don’t call? You don’t check in on mom? Is that it? Is that what you do?”

The brothers shared a touching moment in Episode 9 when Randall and Elliot were trying to get Joe Jr. clean. As the youngest Stabler battled withdrawal symptoms, he told Elliot that he never asked him to get involved in the mess with Emery. “You gave me no choice,” Elliot responded. “What was I supposed to do? Just stand by while you flushed your life down the toilet?” Joe Jr. replied simply: “I love you.”

Although the Stabler brothers have their issues, it would break Elliot’s heart to lose another family member. Fans are hoping Joe Jr. survives the high-stakes finale, for Elliot’s sake, but they’ll just have to tune in to find out.
