Geico vs. Liberty Mutual: Usage-Based Auto Insurance

Both Liberty Mutual and Geico offer usage-based auto insurance programs, respectively named Liberty Mutual RightTrack® and Geico DriveEasy. Both telematics insurance systems have you download an app on your phone to keep track of your driving score, but there can be different ways to monitor your behaviors behind the wheel.

Geico’s DriveEasy uses the app and sensors in your phone to track your driving habits. With Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack, there are three different options available depending on where you live:

  • RightTrack Mobile App: The app tracks driving behaviors and shows you your score.
  • RightTrack Plug-in: For those living in New York, Liberty Mutual sends you a device to plug into the OBD port of your car. To view driving scores, you’ll log into the My RightTrack portal after 90 days of driving.
  • RightTrack Tag: The tag is shipped to you. You place it on your windshield, behind your rearview mirror and link it with your RightTrack app. You view your score in the app.

Another key difference between the two is that RightTrack only tracks your driving behaviors for a 90-day period, while DriveEasy continues to monitor your driving behaviors while enrolled in the program.

Here are the factors our ratings take into account:

  • Cost: Auto insurance rate estimates generated by Quadrant Information Services and discount opportunities were both taken into consideration.
  • Coverage: Companies that offer a variety of choices for insurance coverage are more likely to meet consumer needs.
  • Reputation and experience: Our research team considered market share, ratings from industry experts and years in business when giving this score.
  • Availability: Auto insurance companies with greater state availability and few eligibility requirements scored highest in this category.
  • Customer experience: This score is based on volume of complaints reported by the NAIC and customer satisfaction ratings reported by J.D. Power. We also considered the responsiveness, friendliness and helpfulness of each insurance company’s customer service team based on our own shopper analysis.
