Zum 491. und letzten Mal stand ein ganz Großer an der Seitenlinie des FC Liverpool: Nach neun Jahren, acht Titeln, darunter der Gewinn der Champions League 2019 und der Meistertitel 2020, sowie 300 Siegen endete das Kapitel Jürgen Klopp bei den Reds mit dem Duell gegen die Wolverhampton Wanderers. Weil sich Liverpool durch durchwachsene Leistungen bereits vor Wochen aus dem Meisterschaftskampf verabschiedet hatte, stand das letzte Spiel so rein im Zeichen des Abschieds. Bereits vor dem Anpfiff zierte der Schriftzug "Danke Jürgen" die Ränge an der Anfield Road.
Semedo fliegt früh
Bei seiner letzten Liverpool-Startaufstellung vertraute der Coach auf nur einen Wechsel im Vergleich zum turbulenten 3:3 gegen Aston Villa am Montag. Robertson kehrte in die erste Elf und verdrängte Gomez auf die Bank. Balldominant präsentierten sich die Hausherren von Beginn an, doch Lücken fand Liverpool gegen tiefstehende Wolves nur selten. So dauerte es bis zur 17. Minute als Gakpo erstmals gefährlich vor Gäste-Schlussmann José Sa auftauchte, den Führungstreffer aber verpasste (17.).

Im direkten Gegenzug meldeten sich auch die Gäste ein erstes Mal an, Hwang tauchte beim Konter frei vor Alisson auf, setzte seinen Versuch allerdings neben das Tor. Wenig später schwächten sich die Gäste dann selbst, als Schienenspieler Semedo gegen Mac Allister klar zu spät kam und nach VAR-Einsatz folgerichtig vom Platz geschickt wurde (28.).
Doppelschlag: Liverpool schlägt vor der Pause zu
Lange dauerte es in der Folge nicht, bis Liverpool seine neu gewonnene Überzahl auch in Tore ummünzen konnte. Mac Allister, eben noch rüde gefoult worden, stand bei einer Elliott-Flanke goldrichtig und nickte aus neun Metern zur Führung der Reds ein (34.).
Auch ein zweiter Treffer sollte vor der Pause noch gelingen: Nachdem Endo aus der Distanz noch an José Sa gescheitert war, schaltete Innenverteidiger Quansah bei der folgenden Ecke am schnellsten und drückte die Kugel nach einem Abschluss von Salah entscheidend hinter die Linie (40.).
Liverpools Chancenwucher - Dohertys Anschlusstreffer zählt nicht
Auch nach dem Seitenwechsel blieben die Reds drückend dominant: Quasi mit dem Wiederanpfiff netzte zunächst Mac Allister ein, doch der Treffer zählte nicht, weil die Kugel vor dem Treffer knapp die Torauslinie überschritten hatte (46.). Nur wenig später bediente Gakpo Luis Diaz nach einem schlimmen Fehler von Toti, doch der Kolumbianer traf aus sechs Metern nicht ins verlassene Tor (50.).
Auch im Nachgang blieben die Hausherren dran, doch der dritte Treffer wollte einfach nicht fallen. Zunächst scheiterte Gakpo am einmal mehr herausragend reagierenden José Sa, dann lenkte Mac Allister einen Abschluss von Alexander-Arnold knapp über die Latte (58./59.). Ganz abgeschrieben hatten sich aber auch die Gäste noch nicht, knapp zehn Minuten später verpasste Matheus Cunha nach toller Vorarbeit von Ait Nouri den beinahe sicher geglaubten Anschlusstreffer (68.). Auf der Gegenseite fand derweil Salah erneut in José Sa seinen Meister (69.).
Dann brach so langsam die Schlussphase an und während sich der Fokus der Anhänger immer mehr vom Platz auf den Trainer verlagerte, plätschterte die Partie auch weitgehend vor sich hin. Eine Ausnahme stellte Dohertys vermeintlicher Anschlusstreffer dar, doch eine knappe Abseitsstellung des Jokers machte auch diesen zunichte (86.).

Und so blieb es am Ende beim klaren und verdienten 2:0 zum Abschied von Jürgen Klopp an der Anfield Road. Die Reds beenden die Spielzeit 2023/24 auf dem dritten Tabellenplatz und werden in der kommenden Saison unter Arne Slot wieder angreifen, die Wolves wurden derweil 14.

Everton were one of the first members of the Football League but when they were evicted from Anfield in 1892, stadium owner John Houlding was left with an empty ground and no team to play in it. So Houlding decided to form his own team and, on 3 June 1892, Liverpool Football Club was born.
With Mainz, he won promotion to the Bundesliga back in 2004, and then won back-to-back Bundesliga titles with Dortmund from 2010-2012. He won his first cup final in 2012, adding the DFB-Pokal to his collection by beating Bayern Munich 5-2. He then added two DFL-Supercups in 2013 and 2014.
Liverpool competed in European competitions for 21 consecutive seasons until the 1985 European Cup final, the occasion of the Heysel Stadium disaster, following which the club was banned from European competitions for six seasons.
In the 19th century, Liverpool rose to global economic importance at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution and built the first intercity railway, the first non-combustible warehouse system (the Royal Albert Dock), and a pioneering elevated electrical railway; it was granted city status in 1880.
It was then the 1965-66 season that Liverpool wore the all-red for the first time, and have never looked back since. The media and supporters then coined Liverpool: The Reds.
How many trophies has Klopp won at Liverpool? Judging Klopp purely on silverware, his haul is notable. One Premier League title, one Champions League crown, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the Community Shield, a UEFA Super Cup and a Fifa Club World Cup.
But as much as he loved the club, he did not want that. On Wednesday, he said that "the club is bigger than all of us," and added that he felt that whatever he did next at Dortmund was always going to be viewed in the light of his successes of the past few years.
The club's longest-serving manager was Tom Watson, who managed the club from 1896 to 1915, totalling 19 years. Kenny Dalglish is the only person to have managed the club on two occasions. He first managed Liverpool from 1985 to February 1991, and then from January 2011 to June 2012.

A recent study concluded that the Red Devils have 82 million online fans, compared to 45 million Liverpool followers, while United's own website insists they have a 'global community of 1.1 billion' supporters.
As of 25 May 2024, they have the same record number of total trophies won – 68, though United lead in the head-to-head record between the two teams, with 83 wins to Liverpool's 71; the remaining 60 matches have finished as draws.
After becoming a chart hit, the song gained popularity among Liverpool F.C. fans, and quickly became the football anthem of the club, which adopted "You'll Never Walk Alone" as its official motto on its coat of arms.
