What are some games that don't run properly on OPL? I know that Ratchet 3 has some strange slowdown whenever you kill enemies that doesn't happen when you play from a disc.

      Do you use GSM?

What are some games that run better on OPL? I remember games like Simpsons Hit and Run had abysmal load times, are those better when you aren't reading from a disc?

Most jrpgs. Especially the ones with fmv's that would skip on optical and long cutscenes (Xenosaga).

Only got partway through the first one after copying the files over Ethernet but seems to be working fine, but OPL is honestly pretty damn reliable in my experience.
The only game I could not get to behave was GT4 for whatever reason, it only seems to work off the original disc

I know on my Okage disc, the opening parade scene would have the audio glitch out, but copying from that same disc to the hdd and playing it fixed it.

I'd imagine any game that has constant streaming like the GTA games. Should fix common issues like the floor not loading in time so you see through the world.

I use smb exslusively and the only game I failed to make work was Metal Arms but I use an old version of OPL because I cant be bothered.

Outside of that, MOH frontline refuses to in-game reset to opl menu, it just freezes instread but who cares.

Even with Mode 1 enabled? That's supposed to emulate dvd speeds. I will test some of these games on the weekend, I don't remember ever testing a game where the options didn't fix the problems they could have.

This might sound like a moronic question, but how do you install different OPL builds?
You just copy them to the HDD?
I'm asking because those quickly fill my regular memory card space.

You can just launch them from a USB using uLaunchELF.

All OPL versions create a folder called OPL in the HDD when you first run the program. This folder contains artwork, configs, etc and is only created once. The OPL application itself is just an .elf file (ps2 version of an .exe). You can have as many .elf files as you want and put them anywhere, even on usb. It's really not needed to have that many versions though, usually the latest nightly + 5 years old build (can't remember the exact version I have) is enough. From all the games I tested, there was only 1 that didn't boot with the nightly and ran perfectly on the old build. I think it was one of the Arcana Hearts games but I can't remember exacly.

Alright, I tested Klonoa 2 on internal HDD. By default, with all options off, it has audio issues, cracking sounds and no music. Enabling Mode 1 (Accurate Reads), the game runs perfectly, music and sound in cutscenes and gameplay. So, unless you guys are talking about some bug later in the game, it seems to be working just fine at first glance. Here's some vids in action (please excuse the getto camera work). I'll post a pic of the opl version, I can't remember, but it's about a month old at best.

            Hey, good work.

You certainly don't have to, but if you have a few minutes, could you test Star Wars Racer Revenge to see if they finally got it working on later OPL builds (it is notorious for not working on OPL or ESR...well, notorious in my mind at least).

Try hitting the metallic enemy near the end of level 1. That usually makes the game freeze.

              You're correct, just tried that.

Did a lot of testing, as almost always, IGR was the culprit. I don't know why you can't disable that sh*t globally, it's more troublesome than it's worth. So basically, Modes 1 and 6 need to be ON for Klonoa 2. No freeze when you hit the metallic enemy, tried many times and no freeze.

Yeah, you're right, that seems to fix both the music and the freezing with the metallic enemy. It's still missing sound effects and any sound in the intro before the title card for me, though. I'll try out other modes later to see if it'll fix it.

Try synchronous and lowering the read speed. Klonoa 2 was probably developed on a beta SDK considering Namco's relationship so it definitely isn't functioning like other PS2 games.

Not sure it would be a good idea to compress games
I can imagine it will have unintended slowdown in games, sounds like it’s just a bit of a novelty

        .zso
It's compressed using LZ4, which is absurdly fast to decompress and light on system resources, which is why it works on PS2. Take a look at the benchmarks (https://github.com/lz4/lz4/)
You can use this to compress images (make sure to use --hdl-fix): https://github.com/Danixu/ziso_compressor

THPS3 supposedly works on a network drive but does not work on an HDD. I remember running into 3 or 4 other games that did not work on an HDD for me. I ended up giving up on it after the HDD adapter I bought for it seemed to give up the ghost. Or maybe the drive died--but I doubt that. I just PCSX2 now, it works great for tons of games and has about the same fraction of compatibility issues, but for different games and different reasons. Stuntman for example is fricked because the missions where you have to chase/tail a car don't work on account of the floating point issue, a car will just crash into a wall and get stuck and make completing the mission impossible. GTA would have this problem but usually you can still complete the mission.

in any case it's nice that PS2 emulation has come so far, I remember checking into it only a few years ago and it seemed like it was in a piss-poor state. I'm hoping it comes all the way. Or as close as it can.

I thought about buying a PS2 because it's disgustingly cheap, but then I gave up because there's no reason to choose a console over emulation. But I want the PS2/PS1 controls, they've aged well (although I don't like the design).

THPS3 works flawlessly via SMB. It's one of those games that run really well on PS2 with silky smooth framerate where there is literally no reason to play the PC version instead.

Using a slim PS3 to play PS2 is hypercope. PCSX2 is unironically better. Acquiring a PS2 should be no issue given that some 150 millions of it were sold

The only thing I can't figure out with OPL is how to properly display cover art. Does OPL support a feature to download the art automatically or do I need to load them onto a USB to load onto my HDD?

The best way to go about it is this: https://oplmanager.com/site/

You connect your HDD or USB, the program will detect all the games installed and it will download all the covers. These covers go to the ART folder inside your HDD (or where your OPL created the folders). You can do this manually of course, but it's a pain to manually resize the covers.

No, you can't swap on the fly unfortunately. I don't have high hopes of that being implemented because other than the Dynasty Warriors games, what other games are are like that? Most (if not all) rpgs and multi discs games let you save at the end of the disc so it's a non issue.

Now that I think about it, I remember someone made an iso with both vanilla and extreme games merged together in a single iso. I haven't look for them but I believe they are out there. That might work if you want them on opl.
