New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and South Korea are among the next to welcome the New Year, with each country experiencing it an hour later than the one before.

The tiny island nation of American Samoa holds the distinction of being the last inhabited place on Earth to celebrate the New Year, welcoming it at 11:00 am GMT (4:30 pm IST) on January 1st.

Howland Island and Baker island are the last places in the world to usher in the New Year, a full 26 hours behind Kiribati islands.

However, the true latecomers to the party are the uninhabited Howland Island and Baker Island, both belonging to the United States. These remote specks of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ring in the New Year at 12:00 pm GMT (5:30 pm IST), a full 26 hours behind Kiritimati Island.
