Maps are of little help when it comes to size comparisons, World Population Review says. They can be misleading because they’re two-dimensional representations of a three-dimensional world. A more accurate way to compare countries is by the area of each, usually measured in square miles or square kilometers.
When it comes to comparing areas of the country, however, there’s a distinction between the land area and area that’s covered by water bodies like lakes, reservoirs and rivers. While the total surface area of countries is made up of both, there’s a significant difference between the countries with higher land area like the U.S., compared with Canada, which has numerous inland water bodies.
The transcontinental country, which spans Asia and Europe, has a total surfacearea of 17.1 million square kilometers – Russia consists of land area for the most part, and only about 4% of the total areaaccounts for territorial waters. In contrast, about 9%of Canada’s surfaceapproximately is covered with water.
In fact, Russia is so large it has nine time zones and borders 16 other countries.
What are the three largest countries in the world?
The U.S.and China have been head-to-head for the position of the third largest country in the world. However, China leads when it comes to the land area compared with the U.S. World Atlas says China is approximately 2% larger than the U.S. in terms of land area.

Time zones of a country include that of dependent territories (except Antarctic claims). France, including its overseas territories, has the most time zones with 12 (13 including its claim in Antarctica).
China, with a total area of 9.38 million square kilometres (3.62 million square miles) according to the World Bank, is the largest country to observe just one time zone: Beijing (or China) Standard Time.
Most countries, especially the smaller ones, have only one time zone. There are 23 countries with at least two time zones. Since all lines of longitude coverage at the North and South Poles, Antarctica and the Arctic technically have all time zones.
1. Russia. The world's largest country is Russia. With a total area of 17,098,246 square kilometers, it is roughly 45 times larger than Japan and makes up 13% of the planet.

The title of "first to celebrate" belongs to a cluster of islands in the Pacific Ocean known as Kiribati. Specifically, the Line Islands, located east of the International Date Line, are the first to see the new day.
You can see that the most extreme time zones are +14 hours at Line Islands (Kiribati), and -12 hours in and around Baker Islands (US). Therefore, the maximum possible difference between times on Earth is 26 hours. That means that at 11:00 PM of a Monday in Baker Island, it is 1:00 AM of a Wednesday in Line Islands.

UTC+14:00 stretches as far as 30° east of the 180° longitude line and creates a large fold in the International Date Line around the Pacific nation of Kiribati.
